Description
The diaspora, also known as the zultanite, is a hydroxide discovered in 1801 in Russia. It is found in metamorphic or sedimentary bauxitic deposits and has a 6,5-7 hardness on the Mohs scale.
The zultanite is a difficult gem to cut due to its perfect smoothing.
It is a very rare and particularly brilliant gem but what makes it fascinating and famous is its characteristic color variation that can pass from an intense green to a purple or yellowish pink for the same specimen depending on whether you look at it using different types of light or that you look at the same under the sunlight but at different times.
You can find even color diasporus gems brown, red, grey and colourless.
The name Zultanite was coined in 2005 Murat Akgun that gave a gem of diasporus to the 36 founding sultans of the ottoman empire precisely with the intention to use this name to refer to a gem that changed color.
