THE BEAUTY OF NATURAL PEARLS: Sale of 100% natural pearls
The pearl is a gem of organic origin, produced by bivalve mollusck. It is mainly composed of concentric layers of calcium carbonate crystals joined by a protein substance: the conchiolin.
There are two main typologies of pearl: freshwater pearls that grow in lake or river environments, belonging to the Hyriopsis genus; and ones growing in marine environments, also known as sea pearls, which belong to the Pinctada genus.
There are three varieties of sea pearls:
Tahiti pearls, formed by a mollusk known as the Pinctada Margheritifera or as the black-lipped oyster, which generally produces only one or two specimens, which present shades of predominantly dark colours;
Australian pearls, which spread between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean and are born from the Pinctada Maxima, the largest pearl oyster, which can reach dimensions of up to 30 cm;
Akoya pearls, which are born from a very small oyster, the Pinctada martensii.
Pearls are born through the production of mother-of-pearl by a mollusk: this mother-of-pearl, also known as the nacre, creates concentric layers around a foreign body introduced inside the mollusk either by accident or because of human intervention.
The shape and color of pearls
Pearls can have various shapes: spherical (typical of the most valuable and therefore most quoted specimens), flattened at the poles, oval, teardrop, rice grain, flamed and finally baroque, meaning that they have a profile that is anything but linear.
It is curious to know that a pearl's color is strongly influenced by the environment in which its mollusk grows. The main colors a pearl can have are white, black or gold, declined in numerous shades that touch gray, violet, pink and champagne.
A decisive role in the quality of a pearl is played by its reflective capacities. In technical jargon this is known as a pearl's Orient, which strongly conditioned by the quality of the mother-of-pearl and closely linked to its brightness and transparency.
These, together with other variables including luster, color quality and surface cleanliness, establish the value of a pearl.
