The kunzite is the pink variety of the mineralogical species spodumens, a lithium and aluminum silicate.

It was discovered in the early 1900s and the first to examine the gem was the mineralogy of Tiffany & Co, George Friedrick Kunz, from which the name "kunzite" derives.
